Many people tend to jump right in at the third part of the \u201c<strong>Conservation, then Efficiency, then Renewables<\/strong>\u201d equation, rather than taking those crucial (although often less exciting and visible) first steps.<\/p>\n<p>However, generating renewable energy <em>is<\/em> a big part of weaning ourselves from fossil fuels, and members of North Quabbin Energy are involved in various projects, on individual, company, and municipal levels, to increase our regional capacity for generating power from solar, water, wind, and other renewable sources. The links below include some area initiatives and companies that we\u2019re aware of that work in these areas (we aren\u2019t necessarily recommending anyone\u2019s work\u2013just listing them for informational purposes).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re considering adding renewable energy capacity to your own home or business, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsireusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DSIRE<\/a> is the place to check for various <strong>incentives<\/strong> that are available to help with costs.<\/li>\n<li>Here&#8217;s a link to our 2016 outline and information sheet about residential PV (photovoltaic) panels, &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/northquabbinenergy.org\/?p=2372\">Home Solar is Ready for You<\/a><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>At a 2006 Energy Expo at the Athol Town Hall, local author Allen Young presented <a title=\"Local hydropower\" href=\"http:\/\/northquabbinenergy.org\/?page_id=292\" target=\"_blank\">this talk<\/a> about <strong>local and regional hydropower<\/strong>.\u00a0 (For additional area hydropower companies, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swiftriverhydro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swift River Hydro<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frenchriverland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French River Land Company<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>A proposed 47 megawatt <strong>biomass electricity generating plant<\/strong> in Greenfield prompted North Quabbin Energy to research and write a statement in 2009 about this form of generating electricity.\u00a0 Click <a title=\"Biomass statement\" href=\"http:\/\/northquabbinenergy.org\/?page_id=299\">here<\/a> for the statement.<\/li>\n<li>As more large-scale <strong>solar farms<\/strong> begin to appear in the region, questions are being raised about this mode of generating electricity.\u00a0 North Quabbin Energy\u2019s written statement on solar farms can be found <a title=\"Solar statement\" href=\"http:\/\/northquabbinenergy.org\/?page_id=321\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooppower.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coop Power<\/a>, based in Greenfield, is active in developing a range of energy efficiency and locally-owned generation projects, including solar installations and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northeastbiodiesel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodiesel production<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nesea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northeast Sustainable Energy Association<\/a>, also based in Greenfield, supports a wide range of sustainable building solutions, including the use of renewable energy.<\/li>\n<li type=\"_moz\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pvsquared.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pioneer Valley Photovoltaics Cooperative<\/a>, or PV Squared, is a collective of experienced installers and designers working on solar thermal and PV and wind projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conservation is always the first and most important step in addressing energy use, followed by a focus on making sure you\u2019re using power as efficiently as possible.
